Women, Men, and Children Took to the Streets

This past weekend an estimated 3.3 million people took to the streets in over 500 organized marches to protest of our new president’s ideals and disregard for human rights, according to statistics gathered by political scientists such as Erica Chenoweth at the University of Denver and Jeremy Pressman at the University of Connecticut (Source: elitedaily.com)

The Women’s March in D.C. was estimated to have been attended by three times the number of people present at Trump’s inauguration the day prior. The data is based on the recorded number of riders on the DC Metro.

Also keep in mind that solidarity marches were held worldwide, on each of the seven continents, including Antarctica.

President Trump Signed Five Executive Orders

Hitting the ground running, President Trump signed five executive orders on January 24.

Without wasting anytime, President Trump signed five executive orders just this morning. He approved the construction of the Keystone and Dakota Access pipelines in hopes of creating 28,000 construction jobs. The third order directs the Commerce Department to maximize the use of U.S. steel in the pipeline projects. The Environmental Protection Agency has warned lawmakers in the past that continuing with these pipeline projects will very likely increase greenhouse emissions, resulting in increased global warming effects.

The fourth and fifth executive orders dealt with streamlining manufacturing processes, and “expedit[ing] environmental reviews and approvals” for infrastructure projects, respectively.

After a close match, Venus Williams will advance in the Women’s Singles category of the Australian Open. Today marked the completion of Day 9 in the 14 day tournament.

Mayor De Blasio Presents 2018 Preliminary Budget for New York

 Mayor De Blasio presented the 2018 budget at City Hall on January 24, 2017, the presentation was entitled “New York Stands Strong.”

Some highlights of the planned $84.6 billion budget include $10.4 million to install bullet proof glass in police vehicles, $6.3 million to hire school crossing guards, and $1 billion to repair roofs of public housing buildings. The plan did not mention fund allocation to address the city’s homelessness problem. The proposal still needs to be approved by the City Council.


Sierra Nevada Beer Issues Recall in 36 States

 Sierra Nevada issued a recall to protect consumers from potential pieces of glass in their bottles

Sierra Nevada brewery is recalling beers due to a number of bottles that may have a flaw which may cause a piece of glass to break off and fall into the bottle, posing a safety issue. The recall covers 36 states, and includes eight of their brews: the flagship brand Pale Ale, Beer Camp Golden IPA, Sidecar Orange Pale Ale, Torpedo Extra IPA, Tropical Torpedo, Nooner, Hop Hunter, and Otra Vez.
