Personal Information Free-for-All
On Thursday, March 23, 2017 the Senate moved in a 50 to 48 vote to dismantle internet privacy protection laws enacted recently in October 2016. If passed in the House, which it is expected to do, this means telecom companies like At&t, Comcast, and Verizon can monitor and track user data to include web browsing, emails, and app activity without permission, in addition to selling that information to third parties. The Federal Communications Commission intention when enacting the laws during the Obama administration was to treat the internet providers with similar regulations placed onto utility services, thereby adding internet access into the same category as basic household services.
Supporters of the dismantling claim the protection laws added superfluous regulations to telecom companies that stifles innovation, at the same time allowing web-based companies like Facebook and Google who also deal with sensitive information, to escape the regulations.
Nations Band Together After Britain’s Terrorist Attack
The Islamic State claimed responsibility for Wednesday attack on London’s Westminster Bridge. The attacker, Khalid Masood, drove a vehicle into a knot of pedestrians on the bridge, then continued to the Parliament Yard where he exited the SUV with two knives. Plains clothes policemen shot and killed Masood. As of Friday morning there have been four deaths and 50 injuries due to the attack.
The world stood alongside London on Wednesday: Germany’s Brandenburg Gate and Israel’s City Hall illuminated the British Flag, France’s Eiffel Tower went dark at midnight to honor the victims, and the UK’s Library of Birmingham lit up in red, white, and blue.
The Future of American Healthcare
It looks like Trump’s plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act isn’t going smoothly. Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, realized early Friday afternoon during the House’s debate on the legislature that the bill lacks the number of votes to pass. Ryan rushed to the White House to advise President Trump that pulling the bill would be in their best interest. This comes after President Trump threatened House Republicans with “political problems” should they vote against the bill.
Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen of New Jersey ignoring Trump’s demands, echoes a sentiment shared by numerous representatives who are against the Affordable Care Act, but still aren’t sold on he proposed healthcare: “Seven years after enactment of Obamacare, I wanted to support legislation that made positive changes to rescue health care in America…unfortunately, the legislation before the House today is currently unacceptable as it would place significant new costs and barriers to care on my constituents in New Jersey.”
