International Yoga Day
On June 21 the world celebrated International Yoga Day. The United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared the day back in December 2014. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the push for a day set aside for yoga, suggesting June 21 as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. In his speech to the General Assembly he said:
“Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.” – Narendra Modi
Protests Mark World Refugee Day
According to a United Nations report, 65.5 million people were forcibly displaced from their homes in 2016. World Refugee Day serves as a reminder to strive for humanity when confronted with refugee issues. The following quote appears on the United Nations site:
“This not about sharing a burden. It is about sharing a global responsibility, based not only the broad idea of our common humanity but also on the very specific obligations of international law. The root problems are war and hatred, not people who flee; refugees are among the first victims of terrorism.” — UN Secretary-General, António Guterres
